CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY SELECTS QUEST SOFTWARE'S SHAREPLEX® TO IMPROVE OPERATIONS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

IRVINE, Calif., April 02, 2001 – Quest Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: QSFT), a leading provider of application management solutions, today announced that Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), one of the largest railway systems in North America, has selected Quest’s SharePlex® for Oracle high availability solution. SharePlex will help ensure the availability of CPR’s central data server, which houses critical operational data, including train locations, routes and delivery times.

“In order to maintain service to our customers and keep business running on schedule, we cannot tolerate downtime,” said Tim Riley, systems integration architect at Canadian Pacific Railway. “We chose SharePlex specifically for its ability to help maintain database and application availability in our dynamically changing environment.”

SharePlex is designed to replicate large volumes of database activity over local area networks or wide area networks and provide usable Oracle instances around-the-clock.

“We have a large database, in which approximately 40 gig of information changes daily. With SharePlex, those changes are applied to the replica of our central database in real time; on a weekly basis we switch users to the replicated copy. Now that we have SharePlex running, a typical outage due to application or infrastructure maintenance has been reduced from approximately eight hours to three minutes. Additionally, total monthly outages have been reduced from an average of 19 hours to less than 30 minutes. We can be proactive in dealing with change,” Riley added.

SharePlex’s advanced performance characteristics, such as real-time replication, low-overhead design and the versatility to replicate between different versions of Oracle also played a key role in CPR’s selection of SharePlex.

SharePlex uses an innovative log-based replication technology to provide database and system administrators with the ability to switch users over to an identical replicated database in the event of an outage without waiting for a disaster recovery response. It achieves this using minimal system and network resources, which makes SharePlex ideal for businesses that are required to maintain continuous uptime.

SharePlex is one component of Quest Software’s High Availability Suite, which helps enable 24x7 availability and optimal performance of mission-critical enterprise applications.
